Areas of Theatre

Backstage top

Stage Manager - This person is responsible for all of the backstage activity and is responsible for everyone listed under backstage duties as well as works hand in hand with the director of the show and with Technical.

Props Manager - This person is responsible for obtaining and organizing props needed for the performance.

Costume Manager - This person is responsible for obtaining and organizing costumes needed for the performance.

Hair and Makeup Manager - This person(s) responsible for assisting with hair and makeup and designing the look for each character.

Stage Hands - These people are responsible for assisting where needed and as directed by the Stage Manager.

Technical top

Sound Manager - This person is responsible for setting up and maintaining microphones, sound effects and sound equipment.

Light Manager - This person is responsible for setting up and operating lights during the performance.

Set Design/Construction Manager - This person is responsible for the designing and construction of the set.

The Technical Managers are responsible for locating additional help if needed.

Production Support top

House Manager - This person is responsible for finding workers for ticket tables and hospitality as well as any set up and tear down needed.

Hospitality Crew - These people are responsible for setting up and refilling refreshments and assisting with set up and tear down as needed.

Ticket Sales - These people are responsible for selling tickets to walk in audience members, counting the audience and mark presale tickets. They are also responsible for guest registration for each show and passing out programs.

Ushers - These people will be responsible for seating our guests, and assisting with set up and teardown as needed.

Directors top

Performance Director - This person is responsible for the following:

  • Choosing the show (approval from Officers needed)
  • Setting up auditioning dates and times
  • Choosing performers for the show based on auditions
  • Schedule and coordinate rehearsals
  • Select a Stage Manager
  • Work with Backstage, Technical and Production Support
  • Work with Music Director if applicable
  • All info needed for flyers, programs and press releases need to be organized and sent to the Marketing Director

Music Director - This person is responsible for the following:

  • Choosing the show/music (approval from Officers needed)
  • Setting up auditioning dates and times
  • Choosing performers for the show based on auditions
  • Selecting Musicians for performances
  • Schedule and coordinate rehearsals
  • Work with Backstage, Technical and Production Support
  • Select a Stage Manager if applicable
  • Work with Performance Director if applicable
  • All info needed for flyers, programs and press releases need to be organized and sent to the Marketing Director

In the event that a musical is being performed the Music Director will only be responsible for heading the music portion of the performance. The Performance Director will be responsible for working with Stage Managers.

Actors/Actress (aka Performers) top

These people will be responsible for the following:

  • Auditioning for shows/performances of interest
  • Attending rehearsals as set by the Director(s)
  • Being on time to all rehearsals and performances
  • Memorization of lines
  • Memorize blocking of scenes
  • Attending dress rehearsal (no exceptions)
  • Be backstage and ready for entrances (on time and mouths silent so you don’t miss your queues)
  • Commitment to the show
  • Work closely with ALL Directors and Managers
  • Costuming: if providing your own costume for performances you will need to get them in for approval and have them readily available {work with Costume Manager on this}
  • Bios will need to be given to the Marketing Director for the programs

Musicians top

Conductor - This person is responsible for working closely with the Music Director and also will conduct the orchestra as needed.

Pianist - This person is responsible for working closely with the Music Director and will be required to play music as selected by the Music Director.

Orchestra - These people will be required to work with the Music Director and follow the instructions from the Conductor if applicable.

Singers top

These people will be responsible for the following:

  • Auditioning for shows/performances of interest
  • Attending rehearsals as set by the Director(s)
  • Being on time to all rehearsals and performances
  • Memorization of songs
  • Memorize choreography if applicable
  • Attending dress rehearsal (no exceptions)
  • Be backstage and ready for entrances (on time and mouths silent so you don’t miss your queues)
  • Commitment to the show
  • Work closely with ALL Directors and Managers
  • Costuming: if providing your own costume for performances you will need to get them in for approval and have them readily available {work with Costume Manager on this}
  • Bios will need to be given to the Marketing Director for the programs

All people mentioned above are required to work closely with the show director and the officers of Ohio OnStage. Everyone is responsible for hanging flyers and promoting the show. The Marketing Director will be responsible for submitting press releases, creating flyers and programs for each show. There are more duties that do tend to come about for everyone; therefore this is not a full list of job duties.
